DIY Electrical Fixes: 3 Simple Problems You Can Solve at Home

At Logicworx Electric Ltd., we understand that not every electrical issue requires professional intervention. Sometimes, a simple fix can save you time and money. Here are three easy electrical problems you can solve yourself before calling an electrician.

1. 🔌Resetting a Tripped Circuit Breaker

What’s Happening? Sudden power loss in part of your home.

Why It Happens: Overloaded circuit, short circuit, or faulty appliance.

How to Fix It:

  • Find your electrical panel and look for a breaker flipped to the "OFF" position.

  • Switch it back to "ON." If it trips again, unplug devices on that circuit and try again.
PRO TIP! It's usually the kettle that's the culprit.

  • If the breaker keeps tripping, there may be a deeper issue that needs an electrician.

2. ⚡Reviving a Dead Outlet

What’s Happening? An outlet stops working.

Why It Happens: A tripped GFCI outlet, loose wiring, or a tripped breaker.

How to Fix It:

  • Look for a nearby GFCI outlet (common in kitchens, bathrooms, and garages) and press the "RESET" button.

  • Plug a different device into the outlet to confirm it’s not the appliance itself.

  • If multiple outlets are out, check your breaker panel for a tripped breaker.

  • If the outlet still doesn’t work, it’s time to call an electrician.

3. 💡Fixing Flickering or Dimming Lights

What’s Happening? Lights flicker or dim unexpectedly.

Why It Happens: Loose or incorrect bulbs, faulty light fixtures, voltage fluctuations, or overloaded circuits.

How to Fix It:

  • Tighten or replace the bulb to ensure a proper connection.

  • If you have a dimmer switch, use a bulb designed for dimming.

  • If flickering happens when using a light plugged into an outlet, plug it into a different outlet to test if it is the light or the outlet.

  • If multiple lights flicker at the same time, the issue may be with the circuit or wiring—call an electrician.
PRO TIP: There may be a power outage. ⚠️ Check online with BC Hydro before you call an Electrician. https://www.bchydro.com/power-outages/app/outage-map.html
